Mjølkevegen: Detours with Birgit (7-days)

Join Birgit Haugen, the author of the popular book Mjølkevegen med avstikkere (translation: The Old Milk Route with detours), on a guided 7-day cycling adventure that’ll show you some of Birgit’s favourite spots around Mjølkevegen.

Togheter with Birgit Haugen, author and cycling enthusiast, we offer a guided 7-day cycling holiday that’ll show you some of her favourite routes around Mjølkevegen. Over the course of 7 days, Birgit will guide you around Golsfjellet and Vaset, showing you all the hidden gems and best-kept secrets in the area. In addition to incredible nature experiences, you’ll also be able to sample some of Norway’s best waffles, coffee and local food!

This cycling holiday will give you a unique experience actively exploring some of the best cycling routes in one of Norway’s most beautiful regions. Each route is handpicked by Birgit as an expert in the local area, and the week is bound to be an adventure-filled holiday you’ll never forget.

This incredible 7-day trip starts with a bus transfer from Oslo to Kamben Mountain Lodge on Golsfjellet. The bus journey will be with the modern and comfortable Valdresekspressen, and the scenic 4-hour journey will take you from the hustle and bustle of Norway’s capital to quiet countryside roads surrounded by blue lakes and vast fields. You’ll spend the first couple of nights at the charming Kamben Mountain Lodge, and there are plenty of opportunities for hikes, walks, swimming, fishing and exploring in the local area alongside your scheduled cycling trips.

Your first cycling trip will be a quick and easy round-trip to Einarset. This is listed as route 3 in Mjølkevegen med avstikkere, and it’s a simple cycling trip that most cyclists will be able to do. This short trip will take you along small country trails and mountain gravel roads, and you’ll be able to take your time and take in the beautiful scenery around you.

The next day, you’ll get to try Birgit’s special tour of Golsfjellet and Tisleifjorden, and the trip is based on a combination of routes 2 and 5 from Mjølkevegen med avstikkere. This is an exciting circuit around the mountain plateau of Golsfjellet that offers beautiful views. The terrain is generally flat, but be prepared for some hills.

On the following day, you’ll hop on your bike and cycle from Golsfjellet to Vaset, where you’ll be spending the next two nights at Gomobu Mountain Lodge. You’ll bike across Stølsvidda to Langestølen and Trollhovd before reaching Vaset. This is a fairly long ride, but it’s a lovely route cycling past idyllic farms and cows and sheep grazing in the summer meadows. You’ll be able to stop along the way to take in some stunning views and enjoy the crisp mountain air.

The next day, Birgit will lead you on a round-trip from Vaset to Syndin and Grønnsenn, and this is route 12 in her book. You’ll cycle past beautiful lakes and idyllic cabins, and at Syndin you’ll have the option of sampling some local food at Syndinstøga, which serves delicious snacks, food and drinks from their café offering stunning views of Grindane and Gilafjell mountains.

On the fifth day of the tour, you’ll cycle from Vaset back to Golsfjellet. Along the way, you’ll take in the fresh mountain air and beautiful views around Krististølen, Storfjorden, Langestølen, Tyrisholt and Gauklia. Guided by Birgit, you’ll arrive back to Kamben Mountain Lodge for some well-deserved rest.

The final cycling tour will be a round-trip to Tisleidalen. The trail is listed as route 1 in Birgit's book Mjølkevegen med avstikkere, and is a very popular cycling route with beautiful views. This is a fairly challenging route with some hills, and is best suited to experienced cyclists. Birgit will lead you along the beautiful Norwegian countryside, where you’ll pass by rivers and lakes and enjoy the natural landscape around you.

There will only be one 7-day tour of Mjølkevegen with Birgit this year. To avoid disappointment, we recommend you book your spot quickly to make sure you get to join the group!
