Gjendebu DNT

DNT’s oldest tourist lodge, built in 1871 located on the west side of Gjende lake. 

Oldest among the DNT cabins, Gjendebu has been active since 1871; placed on the shores of the lake Gjende, towards the Sognefjord, with the Besseggen ridge behind it, it has an advantageous position, with an entire array of DNT cabins and more than 700 floral species around. From its original building – with just 12 bed spaces – Gjendebu has developed to a total of 119 bed spaces. The factor behind this success? Besides enchanting nature and jaw-dropping mountain heights, the cabin is a backdrop for different cultural events, exhibitions and several hike trails, where you have just the embarrassment of which trail to follow. Moreover, the staff of the make any visitors feel welcome and the kitchen staff is able to serve a whooping 3-course dinner which will enchant the palate of any guest!

Kaia Gjendine Slålien - she met Edvard Grieg in , who was so fascinated by her song that he wrote it down and used it in his pieces of music. Queen Wilhelmina of the Netherlands spent a number of years in Jotunheimen together with her daughter.
