Vindhellavegen - Borgund Stave Church hike

Hike across the most spectacular and famous part of The Kings Road.

The hike along Vindhellavegen to Borgund Stave Church is a beautiful and historic route located in Lærdal, Norway. Starting from the Borgund Stave Church parking area, the trail follows Vindhellavegen, a well-preserved section of the old King’s Road (Kongevegen), dating back to the 1790s. This 2.7-kilometer stretch of cobbled road features steep switchbacks, scenic views, and stone walls, offering a glimpse into Norway’s transportation history. The hike is accessible for all fitness levels and takes about 1–1.5 hours round-trip.

At the end of Vindhellavegen lies Borgund Stave Church, a beautifully preserved stave church built around 1180. Known for its distinctive medieval wooden architecture, the church is adorned with intricate carvings of dragons and Norse motifs, symbolizing Norway’s transition from paganism to Christianity. Visitors can explore the church and nearby visitor center, making this hike an enriching combination of natural beauty and cultural heritage.
