Eastern Torfinnstind, at about 2,119 meters above sea level, is the easternmost and tallest of the three Torfinnstind peaks in Jotunheimen. It rises above Lake Bygdin and is usually accessed from the Torfinnsbu hut, which can be reached by foot or boat. The final ascent involves some scrambling, offering a moderately challenging route for experienced hikers. In good conditions (mid-July to early autumn), climbers are rewarded with panoramic views of Jotunheimen’s dramatic landscape.

Difficulty and Safety

  • Scrambling / Easy Climbing: Expect steep and exposed sections requiring a sure foot and, if necessary, some climbing skills.
  • Experience: It’s helpful to have experience in steep, high-mountain terrain. If you’re unsure, consider hiring a local guide.
  • Season: The best time to go is typically from mid-July to September, once the snow has melted in the most challenging sections.

Tips

  • Check the weather forecast carefully—finding your way can be difficult in poor visibility.
  • Bring a helmet and possibly basic climbing gear if you are uncertain about your skills.
  • Sturdy footwear with a good grip is essential.

Eastern Torfinnstind is an exciting destination for those looking for a challenging and exposed summit trip in Jotunheimen. Enjoy the climb and the magnificent view from the top!

How to get here

  • Torfinnsbu: Many hikers begin at Torfinnsbu by Lake Bygdin. You can reach it either by hiking from the Valdres side (via private/municipal roads) or taking a boat across Lake Bygdin (e.g., M/B Bitihorn, if it’s in operation).
  • Alternative Start Points: Some people start from the Bygdin tourist lodge or other nearby cabins, but Torfinnsbu is the closest and most common starting point.

Route Description

  1. From Torfinnsbu: Follow the marked trail a bit up the valley. Eventually, you leave the trail and enter increasingly steep terrain as you approach the foot of Eastern Torfinnstind.
  2. Ascent: The ridge and the final part of the ascent typically involve scrambling (grade 2–3), so be prepared for airy and exposed sections.
  3. The Summit: The view is spectacular, overlooking Lake Bygdin, the peaks of Jotunheimen, and nearby mountains like Falketind and Uranostind.
