Tour de Dovre will take you through peaceful mountain terrain, idyllic farmland and stunning valleys – and you’ll also experience three of Norway’s most famous National Parks. The cycle route will see you travelling through the beautiful National Parks Dovre, Rondane and Dovrefjell, and you’ll also enjoy incredible views of the famous Gudbrandsdalen and Grimsdalen valleys. Fantastic views of some of Norway’s most iconic mountains will accompany you on your journey.
Tour de Dovre is a truly spectacular cycle journey. The scenic tour winds through three of Norway’s most famous National Parks, allowing you to take in the natural beauty of your spectacular surroundings on two wheels. Aside from the incredible views, you’ll also be able to take in other natural and traditional experiences if you’d like – such as looking for moose or the famous musk ox that live in these parts, and sampling some local Norwegian food and delicacies.
Your cycling adventure will start in Dovre, and the scenic Tour de Dovre trail will allow you to experience this part of Norway from the comfort of your bike seat. The route will see you cycling between Hjerkinn and Grimsdalshytta along the river Folla. The trip will take you into Grimsdalen, one of Norway’s most beautiful mountain valleys, and you’ll be cycling between two of Norway’s most well-known National Parks – Dovre and Rondane. Overall, it’s a fairly easy stretch to cycle, and though some sections are a little steep, you’ll quickly be rewarded with stunning views of Dovre and Jotunheimen.
You’ll travel through Grimsdalen between Grimsdalshytta and Trolltun, passing along the well-known rivers Grimse, Grimsdalsmyrene and Vestlegrimsi. The mountain terrain is fairly flat and pleasant to cycle, with beautiful scenery all around you. You’ll see charming little farms, winding rivers and calm pastures along the way, as well as splendid views of mountains in the distance. As you reach Gudbrandsdalen, one of Norway’s most famous valleys, you’ll be cycling along the river Gudbrandslågen.
You’ll also cycle between Trolltun and Hjerkinn, following the old mountain road across Dovrefjell. As you cycle along on these quiet mountain trails, you’ll have the magnificent views of the famous mountain Snøhetta and the stunning Dovre National Park motivating you to continue on. You’ll also have great views of the Grytdalen valley, and there are several great spots where you can stop for a bite to eat and some photos of your beautiful natural surroundings.
Along the way, you’ll stay the night in some lovely accommodations that celebrate Norwegian heritage and tradition. After a day of cycling and exploring, you’ll get some much-needed rest and relaxation at Hjerkinn Mountain Lodge, Grimsdalshytta and Trolltun Guesthouse. These are all great accommodations with a long-standing tradition of hosting travellers to this historic region of Norway, and there are plenty of opportunities for exploring the local area with short hikes, cycle rides, visiting mountain farms, fishing, horseback riding and other experiences closeby.
