Glittertind
Share:– At 2,457 m above sea level, Glittertind is the second highest mountain in Norway, located within the municipality of Lom.
It’s easy to grasp why the hike to Glittertind is so popular; not only is it an exciting hike that takes you over a glacier, which in itself is reason enough to go, but the hike to Glittertind gives you a truly captivating view of Jotunheimen National Park.
The summit of Glittertind was reached for the first time in 1841 by Harald Nicolai Storm Wergeland and Hans Sletten. Glittertind had earlier challenged Galdhøpiggen for the title as Norway’s highest mountain. Then, the ongoing debate was whether a glacier is included in the measurement of a mountain or not, and if it was then Glittertind would be the vanquisher at 2481 m.a.s.l., against Galdhøpiggen at 2,469 m.a.s.l. But that was then, and since the debate has been put to rest as the disheartening fact that the glacier on Glittertind is indeed retreating and today measures around 2,457 m.a.s.l.
Glittertind can be accessed from the DNT cabin Glitterheim and Spiterstulen lodge. From Glitterheim you will follow the marked path North West until you reach 2250 m.a.s.l and gere you will head straight West and cross the Glitterbrean Glacier that you’ll follow to the top. Alternatively, you’ll go from Spiterstulen.
